Knowledge
Walls
combine information with art
to make what
is really a giant poster.
The information part is vitally important; without it the K-Wall
is simply a decorative part of the NavCenter (not always a bad thing,
but no longer a true K-Wall!). But the art is essential, too. It's
the art which entices a person to cross the room to investigate
the wall, the art which quickly conveys the main points, the art
which jazzes up a lengthy, wordy chunk of info which otherwise may
be too dry.
Art
is the meat.
But the need for art in the building
of a K-Wall does NOT mean that K-Wall construction can only be done
by those with "inherent talent" or an art degree. There
aren't any "secrets". Drawing ability is irrelevant. All
that's required is a willingness to experiment and a sense of fun.
With those two things, you're already well on your way to making
great K-Walls!
K-Walls can be broken down into four
parts: design, construction,
evolution, and visual
appeal. Design is the first thing that needs consideration.
Good design can save a lot of time and frustration later in the
process. The construction involves lettering, drawing, and the actual
placing of materials on the wall. Evolution incorporates the idea
of growth: not all K-Walls must be in their
finished state when the participants come in the door. Visual
Appeal is the "red thread" which stitches together
and underlies all of the other concepts. It must be considered every
step of the way.
