Use symbols to represent objects, ideas, themes, etc.
Symbols can provide a quick short-hand with which most people are familiar. Examples of this are International No signs, stop signs, infinity loops, male/female symbols, hearts representing love, dollar signs, etc.
Many common and obscure symbols may be found at www.symbols.com

Glyphs
MG Taylor Corporation has an entire library of glyphs representing ideas and themes commonly used in Navigation Centers. You can find these at www.mgtaylor.com
