writing: tips

Listening
For example, over the course of a three day DesignShop™ the writing team in collaboration with the facilitators steer the participants through the first two days of the event (Scan and Focus) with modules designed to generate specific outcomes. By the end of the second day and the third day (Act), the participants are doing the steering and it's time for the writing team to listen and watch which way the participants take the event. This is true of other types of events as well.

This opportunity to step out of the writing mode and into the event as a listener is also an opportunity for the writing team members to shift into the other roles while doing their listening. The video team can always use another camera operator, and the production team can always use a wall-mapper during report outs. These and many other opportunities are available that allows the writers to be in close proximity to the participants and also help out the rest of the knowledge worker team.

First time on the writing team
If you're giving the writing role a try for the first time, consider looking back to assignments from previous events for ideas and inspiration. Old assignments will help you get a feel for writing style and tone, but remember that you are writing for a new event with a new combination of participants who have a different combination of. Make the assignments fresh and new for them.
