You
can let people fall on their own swords. You can let people destroy
their own case. Sometimes, you have to protect them from that.
It is all a matter of judgment. Do not traumatize yourself about
them. Lots of little mistakes are good. Do not get your self painted
into the corner. Do not get to the point where you have to be
perfect for the next five minutes or it will blow up. Stage the
critical issues carefully.
We
did an event for the Central City Opera. The Opera company owned
a third of the town's assets. They were doing a summer festival.
The town did not get a critical mass going to create itself. You
could not mention selling any of the property. But everyone was
going broke. So, we did an event and invited everyone, including
families who had been feuding for years. We avoided mentioning
selling. The charter said they had to be good stewards. We finally
got to the point where a team went out and came out with a design
for selling. They asked me to present the plan at the board meeting.
I got the notion out about stewardship and developing. They saved
the town and opera company.
