The
facilitation process we use at MG Taylor is design-dependent. There
are three
roles: front of the room, back of the room and center of the
room. There is the stand-up facilitation, facilitation from the
group, and the knowledge
workers. The architecture of how the 5
Es of education (explain, explore, expect, exemplify, and experience)
and the design plays out is the important factor. There is less
facilitation in the traditional sense depending on how these elements
play out.
The
more diverse the people in the group, the less stand-up facilitation
there is. It will be in some cases less than an hour of stand
up facilitation.
We
use design, environment, and the total system of the work that facilitates
the process. It is the 7
Domains that create the context (knowledge management, work
process facilitation, education, environment and tooling, technology,
project management and venture management). If you manage those
things, you do not need to manage people. People who run companies,
families, churches and other organizations are very competent. If
you manage the 7 Domains, they will manage the creative
process.
There
is a role for facilitation. When we do in-front facilitation,
it is strong and aggressive and involved. It is not the neutral
traditional variety. There are a number of skills
and techniques that are important, and you have to design
how you use them.
