voice
Voice in facilitation, and in all regards, is important. Ronald
Reagan was a tremendous speaker and he was able to move people
in ways that you wouldn't imagine. Clinton is also good in that
regard. Gore is not as good in that regard. The ability to communicate
an idea and get people into that idea is key. Once given that
premise, who can present an idea, which has a voice and persona
and is an important issue. Persona is often seen as add on, superficial,
or artificial. But what creates authentic voice is your voice.
If you find your voice, you will always be a good facilitator.
A
lot of the things built into facilitation are crafted to protect
the facilitator and his environment. The best way to approach facilitation
is to seek to be authentic to your own voice and purpose and meaning,
and to be totally vulnerable.
Do
not overcompensate and try to be too nice. In a facilitation situation,
people have agreed to give up a certain part of the administration
so they can be creative. So, the participants have to feel freer.
Notice something about your own being. If you go to California,
you can tell yourself to wake up at 6 AM, even though it is a
different time zone. Metaprogramming is wonderful. If you say,
"I would like to wake up at 6 AM", you are not being directive.
Think about how you facilitate and talk to yourself when you take
yourself through change.
We
put people in an environment where intense periods of concentration
result in creativity. People learn to tolerate and live in ambiguity
until the final ideas emerge.
We
put people in an environment where people are constantly getting
information and feedback.
Language
is important. Be clear. If you want someone to do something, be
direct. If you ask a question, make sure you want an answer.
It
is safe to assume that all words are commands to the unconscious.
All words carry power and can provoke psychological change. Words
have to be accurate and you have to sense them as theater. Take
the responsibility for the power they have. Assume that you are
offering up an instruction set to the biocomputer.
