If
an issue is not defined, you have to cover more ground. You will have
to use your scan time to get the issue more defined.
Analytical work, research, and final design is better done in small
teams than by individuals.
It has been helpful to look at the Vantage
Points Model and see the viewpoint from which the question is
seen.
We used to have the Solution Box,
with the Vantage Points, Creative
Process and Design
Formation Models forming a 7x7x7 box. It is artificial but interesting
to see where something is. When you can see that, it is very clear
what you are dealing with. There are languages in the different traditions
in our culture--engineering, philosophy, art--that we can use for
each area. We also used the solution box to put it on documents. The
document can then have a voice and it will tell you what it is trying
to do and you then know the context and rules for judging.
Our there today, there is not a good, common articulated language
about design processes over time. The question is more complex than
it needs to be because there is no way to really make the assessments.
