If
you look at the 7
Domains Model, the second domain is Work Process Design Facilitation.
This is the same sense as the industrial engineer, the process that
lays out the steps from raw ore coming in the door until wire goes
out the door. The industrial engineer has to know about humans and
interactions as well as machines.
The startling thing about white collar work is that you cannot tell
who designed it. If I look at a building, there is a design process
that I can see. An attorney filing a brief has a design process. A
pilot flying a place has a check list. This is a designed process.
As a child I got to fly with my father and he had me go through the
checklist for the B25. A couple of weeks ago, as we were going to
the Bahamas I noticed that the checklist was the same. It has been
designed and tested, and it works.
When you go into the average office, it is not a designed process.
The term "reengineering" is a misnomer, because it was never
engineered in the first place. It did not challenge the protocols
of the organization. Facilitation--work process design is more than
front of the room facilitation.
